Petersfield Museum presents In association with The Edward Thomas Fellowship The Edward Thomas Literary Festival 2020 (Digital) This three-day digital event (1st-3rd October) looks at the life and work of Edward Thomas. It will expand and explore not only his own literary work but how he has inspired others. His love of nature and his sense of place and belonging will also be studied. Over 20 renowned poets, writers, and academics are taking part. They will include: Daljit Nagra, Kathryn Bevis, Matthew Hollis, the Friends of the Dymock Poets and the Robert Frost Society. New poets such as Jade Cuttle who has recently appeared on BBC's 'The Verb' with Simon Armitage will also be appearing. Jade will be using new techniques she has devised to tune into 'the chatter of plants' in her fascinating session. Join Edward Thomas Fellowship member and nature poet and writer Matthew Oates as he reads and talks about Edward Thomas' poem 'March' on Sunday 21 March 2021, in a separate event following the Fellowship's AGM. Matthew Oates is a well-known broadcaster and ecologist with a particular passion for butterflies. What is perhaps less well-known is his nature writing and poetry which has been led by his interest in and love for the work of another nature and writer and poet - Edward Thomas. As many, particularly Fellowship members, will be aware, Edward Thomas lived from 1878 to 1917 and was killed at the First Battle of Arras on Easter Monday 1917. At that time he was a renowned literary critic and writer of what may be loosely termed 'travel' books, although they were perhaps more concerned with the nature and landscapes he saw as he travelled. The Edward Thomas Birthday Walk will take place at 10:30 am on Sunday 18th July 2021. Owing to current Government Covid restrictions it will be limited to 30 pre-registered participants. Further details are available on the Annual Birthday Walk page.
Planning is now underway for the 2021 Edward Thomas Literary Festival. This will take the form of 'live' and 'digital' events between Monday 27 September and Sunday 3rd October 2021. The Festival is being run in conjunction with Petersfield Museum. Details will appear on their website in due course as participants are confirmed. Events during the week commencing 27 September are likely to be mainly evening sessions. From Friday there will be sessions during the day. Saturday will be a full day of talks and readings, culminating in a joint session with the Robert Frost Society in America and the Edward Thomas Fellowship. Sunday is an additional day added for 2021. As it coincides with the inauguration of the Memorial Stone on the Shoulder of Mutton (2 October 1937) there will be a walk to the Memorial Stone in the morning (the rare photographs below show it being installed a…
